The exquisite strings of The Metropolitan Orchestra (TMO) led by Chief Conductor Sarah-Grace Williams unites for a very special, mouth-watering Sunday afternoon performance within the ornate surrounds of Marrickville Town Hall. The flavorsome program includes gypsy-inspired folk tunes, a world premiere titled Cellar Door, plus Dvorak’s deliciously divine Serenade for Strings.

This special event includes Béla Bartók’s Romanian Folk Dances which are a series of six short works inspired by gypsy and folk dances and music experienced during his travels through Eastern Europe. Undoubtedly ranked amongst Bartók’s most popular compositions, these works will provide a delectable entré to what will be a winter afternoon filled with warmth.

After two Covid affected years of performance, plus a postponement from February of this year, we are excited to present the world premiere of Australian composer Mark Grandison’s Cellar Door. Originally created for the Eight Cellos of The Metropolitan Orchestra back in 2016, this work for string orchestra features eight full-bodied movements designed to take the listener through a carefully curated musical tasting.

The afternoon will come to a succulent pinnacle with what is arguably Antonín Dvořák’s most popular work, his Serenade for Strings in E. Composed in just two weeks during a creative spell in 1875, this work promises a rich and fulfilling digestif to complete the sumptuously fulfilling musical afternoon banquet.
