Beethoven’s commanding Egmont Overture sets the tone for The Metropolitan Orchestra’s emotionally charged second Met Concert for 2022. Including Nigel Westlake’s illustrative Antarctica Suite for Guitar and Orchestra plus Johannes Brahms stirring second symphony, listeners can look forward to a musical journey to be remembered.

Written for the belated Vienna premiere of the play by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe in 1809, Beethoven’s powerful Egmont Overture sets a dramatic scene from its ominous slow introduction to the manic transformation of tragedy into triumph, this enduring work will leave the audience breathless during the first phase of the evening.

TMO will then welcome Australian guitarist Giuseppe Zangari to join with Chief Conductor Sarah-Grace Williams for Nigel Westlake’s Antarctica. The four movements of Antarctica traverse take this desolate landscape with music drawn from the primary themes of the original film for which it was written, covering the ‘desolate grandeur of the pole, the life it sustains and human presence in the region, both historically and today’.

Symphony number two is one of the most cheerful of Brahms’ mature works, so much so that it is often called his “Pastoral”, in obvious reference to Beethoven’s symphony with the same name. This vibrant work will provide an uplifting finale to the global musical journey.

Supported by the NSW Government through Create NSW and The Inner West Council.
